This country highlight showcases how the Global Inclusive Insurance Facility (GIIF) has supported the development of Zambia’s agricultural insurance market since 2016. Working closely with private insurers, government stakeholders, and development partners, GIIF has helped expand access to weather-index insurance and strengthen the overall ecosystem for inclusive insurance.

Key achievements include supporting product innovation, strengthening regulatory capacity, and integrating digital solutions to improve outreach and efficiency. These efforts have enabled nearly 20 million people, including smallholder farmers and women who often face barriers to financial inclusion, to access insurance coverage that helps protect their livelihoods.

GIIF’s support has also contributed to the implementation of large-scale programs such as the Farmer Input Support Program (FISP), allowing farmers to better manage climate risks, invest in productivity, and build resilience over time.

This highlight also reflects on lessons learned from Zambia’s experience, offering valuable insights into scaling agricultural insurance in emerging markets.
